Businesses for Good, Sustainable Fashion: Man’s Best Friend (MBF)

Not just Man’s Best Friend, but environmentally-friendly too! MBF is a clothing brand that focuses on sustainability through material, packaging and and production. Their apparels boast water-resistant nanotechnology, anti-bacterial properties and lower carbon footprint – an incredible innovation for the future of fabrics and a sustainable solution for corporate clothing!

  1. Why did we start MBF?

We started MBF as students initially providing sustainable shorts for men as we felt there was a gap in sustainable menswear in the market. We were doing this for a while before we pivoted away from it due to some difficulties and challenges we faced selling to consumers. At the same time, we saw a real struggle for corporations and organisations to become more sustainable, especially in apparel, which made us venture into the B2B space. Hence, we started providing sustainable apparel solutions to corporations in hopes to make their operations more environmentally friendly.

  1. What does MBF strive to be as a B2B sustainable procurement company that currently specialises in apparel?

Our mission is to create and promote avenues for a greener lifestyle, by connecting individuals and firms with sustainable alternatives to their everyday apparel. We aim to help organisations and companies to find ways to be sustainable through the things they purchase. In terms of apparels, we source for fabrics that emit lower carbon emissions and use less water compared to conventional textiles like virgin cotton and virgin polyester.

MBF shorts leverage nanotechnology that makes it water-resistant

  1. How is MBF accomplishing those goals?

A large part of choosing which fabrics we use is through lifecycle analysis of these textiles and calculating the carbon emissions and water usage for the materials before making an informed decision.

We also understand that the fabrics alone are not enough in providing clients (and us) confidence that the textiles we use are doing the most to accomplish their sustainability goals. We thus source for textiles that are certified under global sustainability standards like the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and Global Recycled Standard (GRS).

These certifications assert that criteria such as recycled-content requirements, and testing and tracking for harmful substances is done, confirming that we have used a more accurate labeling to encourage innovation in the use of related materials, to establish more transparency in the supply chain for tracking, and to provide our clients with better information.

  1. What do we want to achieve in the future?

We are hoping to move towards B2B sustainable procurement beyond apparels. Our first foray outside the apparel space is into packaging – reusing and recycling programmes, changing the types of packaging used and ensuring there are sustainability certifications that show a reduction in carbon emissions, water usage and/or pollutants.

As we progress in our journey as a sustainability startup, we aim to become the one-stop solution to sustainable procurement, which empowers individuals and firms to gain access to environmentally-beneficial solutions to their everyday sustainability needs, and lead awareness on decarbonisation practices.

The final product?

The world’s first digitalised sustainable procurement platform, where we can enable sourcing, creation, delivery, and tracking of the entire sustainable supply chain, from raw material to final product.
